We offer confidential written expert philatelic, numismatic and collectible appraisals for individuals, banks, attorneys, estates, trusts and government institutions. Appraisals can be stated at fair market value or for insurance purposes. Appraisals can be performed in the comfort of your home or at our Emeryville, CA offices. Fees for appraisals are available on request. We are certified USPAP (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice) appraisers.

We offer several options for the liquidation of any property we evaluate or appraise, including direct purchase, consignment or auction.

MEET RON UMILE, PRESIDENT

Ronald F. Umile is one of the world’s foremost experts on rare United States and foreign stamps and postal history, with over 35 years of professional experience. He is also knowledgeable in the fields of coins and precious metals, historical documents, autographs, ephemera and memorabilia. Mr. Umile is the former Director of West Coast Operations for Harmer’s International, the worldwide stamp auctioneers responsible for the sale of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s famous stamp collection. He is also the former Director of Butterfield & Butterfield Auctioneers Philatelic Division in San Francisco and the former owner and Philatelic Director of Robert R. Johnson Coin & Stamp Company. With eBay’s acquisition of Butterfield, he consulted with eBay and other top online philatelic websites.

Recognizing the importance of authentication in the online marketplace, Mr. Umile was a pioneering visionary in the stamp-grading arena. He was instrumental in arranging the acquisition of PSE (Professional Stamp Experts) by PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service), setting the industry standard for how stamps are valued today. He has also appeared on various appraisal television programs, testified as an expert witness in court cases involving stamps and has performed numerous appraisals. Over his career, he has been personally responsible for over $200 million in collectible transactions.

Mr. Umile is a certified U.S.P.A.P. (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice) appraiser. He is also a member of the American Stamp Dealer Association, American Philatelic Society, American Numismatic Association, Postal History Society, U.S. Philatelic Classics Society, Manuscript Society, Ephemera Society, and Collector’s Club of New York.

As U.S.S.C. has been a landmark in San Francisco for collectors from all over the world for nearly a century, it is my honor to take over the reigns from the Sankey family. After many years in the business, Mr. Warren Sankey is taking his well-deserved retirement. I have been an associate of Mr. Sankey for over 30 years and it is my distinct pleasure to take the company into a new era. We have expanded our boundaries into other areas including coins and various historical collectibles to better serve our clients. Although the iconic Bush Street location is now gone, we are still here to serve both our former and new clients.
